Ladies Day at the Breeders Cup might seem like a good idea from a marketing point of view but in a peculiar way it smacks of sexism to me.
Moving the Distaff to Friday and renaming it the Ladies Classic does two things, the renaming insults the intelligence of serious racing fans who know what Distaff means and subconsciously suggests that Distaff racing is second rate and a cut below the main event held the next day. I for one resent the dumbing down of the sport just to satisfy a few marketing wonks who don't know shit
It almost seems like someone at the Breeders Cup forgot that both Lady's Secret and Azeri used the Breeders Cup Distaff as a springboard to being named HOTY. That alone is reason enough for the Distaff to be on the same card as the Classic and a much better reason than having the new Breeders Cup Marathon, ungraded I assume, on on the main card.
And I bet if you asked the other eight members of the Distaff set who have been named HOTY, they'd say Ladies Day is everything Susan B. Anthony fought against.
